What would be the best way to render interactive 3D sound created by FMOD 3D to a file? Is there even a format for 7.1 channel sound???

Greatful for answers to this tricky question!

Ogg Vorbis has support for multichannel audio. I’m not sure if it can handle the 8 channels required for 7.1, but it’s probably your best bet.

Ogg Vorbis, All right! But what does the save-to-file process looks like???

It looks like an ogg file with ogg container packets with vorbis audio encoded data, BeSweet[/url:3mmtxwpu] can produce such file.
Not all replayer take care of multichannel ogg vorbis file but some of them like foobar2000, xmplay, zinf and all directshow player (bsplayer, zoomplayer …) support them.
Btw, Fraunhofer have just released tools to encode to 5.1 mp3 (Mp3 Surround[/url:3mmtxwpu]).
