I am having difficulties figuring out why certain wav files I attempt to play, give me an unknown format error, while others work just fine. These ‘unknown’ wavs play just fine in every media player I have available, but when loaded into fmod they fail.

One wav file that fails is a random wav I grabbed from a trillian installation, its located in [u:33uqonfh]TP21Emoticons-16×16/surprised.wav[/u:33uqonfh]

The wav’s meta info is:
Length: 00:02
Sample Rate: 11,025Hz
Sample Size: 4 bits (although this is questionable, a friends pc reports a different bit size, and I have never heard of a 4bit sample)
Channels: 1

The test platform I am using is Linux, I have yet to try this on a different platform.

Machine setup, Ubuntu Linux 5.10, Kernel 2.6.12-10-386

Anyone know the reason why this is?

4 bits can be used for ADPCM compression (IMA ADPCM for example).
