Currently in designer one can choose between PCM and ADPCM for basic sound compression. It would be extremely useful if this could be expanded to all formats FMOD could decompress on the fly along with adjustable quality settings for mp3, xma etc..

We would like these settings to be on a per file basis but currently they are on a bank by bank basis. Particularly with lossy compression designers will want to vary quality settings per file for maximal optimization per sound quality.

Another important aspect is that all of these settings need to vary per platform so one designer file can hold the compression settings for all files and all platforms. FMOD does this currently per bank which is a good start. And this platform setting would need to affect which compression algos could be chosen.

FMOD Designer supports a couple of cross platform compression methods (PCM, ADPCM) as well as native compression methods per platform i.e. XMA on Xbox360, VAG on PS2 etc. We may support other formats like MP3 in the future. We already plan on implementing adjustable quality settings.

We’ll look into this for a future version.

This was implemented quite a while ago. Available compression methods are different per platform and chosen compression methods are remembered per platform too.

Cheers,
