I have an urgent problem where the sound generated by streaming mp3’s will after a period of time start playing with distortion or static. I know about stuttering and skipping problems, and this is different. This sounds like the static one would hear on an FM radio.

This is not a gaming application, and the CPU is not doing much more than running fmod.

Platform: HP hx2490 (Windows mobile 2005), Mio DigiWalker 169 (WM 2003, Second Edition)

  1. The problem sometimes commences after a few minutes of the application running, at other times after hours.

  2. Once the problem commences, it does not go away until the application is restarted (sometimes a soft reset of the device is required)

  3. Once the problem commences, I have tried running Windows Media Player. At this time, the fmod application is still running, but with no audio playing. This also plays with static (but wait till next point…)

  4. Today I closed the fmod application, and tried Windows Media Player again, and now it played without static. Other times, a soft reset was needed, and then WMP played without static.

Any clues? Any help most appreciated. This is a time critical issue.

Cheers
Ronny

Hi

I have recorded a sample where the playback had the static present.

i’d still recommend adjusting the buffer size, it sounds like a block size aligned click to me, and possibly caused by the sound device driver going bad and reporting back a bad position after a while.
Also try different sample rates for FSOUND_Init and see what happens. This isnt a known issue so it is going to be something to do with your device.
