hi im new to game audio. cool app. just checking out possible middleware solutions. i know nothing about using any api’s. im not even really familiar with the game creation workflow. know of any workflow info links?

does it even make sense to use fmod designer in osx? can the game in prototype (or whatever) format (whatever format that is) be delivered to sound designer and played in osx? with what app?

is fmod ex required in order to use fmod designer (i installed it first cause it seems like it may be)? does designer use components installed by fmod ex?

why can’t i open the example fmod designer project in osx? it doesn’t even appear in open dialog but it does in save as dialog. i can open it no problem in winxp 32 bit.

y is fmod designer crashing in winxp while i play sounds back in the wave banks (i think it was here if not then sound definitions)?

how come only pc and sony playstation 3 show up in the platform pulldown?

is 22.05khz a standard game sample rate?

where do reverb definitions come into the picture? is it just an overall reverb that the programmer can mess with and turn on/off at his leisure?

full of questions,
jg

Check out http://www.gamasutra.com. There’s a large number of game audio feature articles there.

The game you’re working on will have to be written for osx if you want to play it on osx. This holds true whatever middleware solutions you choose.

The two seperate downloads (FMOD Ex Programmer’s API and FMOD Designer Tool) are fully self-contained. You don’t need the FMOD Ex Programmer’s API if you just want to use FMOD Designer.

I’ll check into that.

What version are you using? The latest is 1.04.23. Does it always crash or only with specific wave files? If you could send me a project that reproduces the problem that’d be great.

[quote:arwg4pxj]how come only pc and sony playstation 3 show up in the platform pulldown?
[/quote:arwg4pxj]

With the exception of PC and PS3, platforms are only enabled if the corresponding platform SDK is installed (i.e. Microsoft-supplied Xbox360 SDK for Xbox360 etc.)

[quote:arwg4pxj]is 22.05khz a standard game sample rate?
[/quote:arwg4pxj]

Games commonly use wave files with sample rates anywhere between 48khz and 8khz as needed. 22.05khz samples are commonly used in games.

Yes. The sound deisgner can tweak and preview a reverb using FMOD Designer and then the programmer can enable/disable it at will in the game.

wow thanks for the great reply. i was already on gamasutra but i gotta surf around it some more and find some juice.

yes using latest version 1.04.23 on both osx 10.4.5 and winxp pro on hp laptop 384mb ram 3.2ghz pentium4 through built-in sound card.

was crashing in winxp with audio files from the included example. i couldn’t get it to repeat at first. then i activated a reverb definition, started clicking around in the event editor, went back and forth between sound definitions and wave banks. after a bit of this it crashed with ‘encountered a problem needs to close. i think it crashes in the sound definitions tab. i have fmod ex installed which i wont be using- just going to use fmod designer. im gonna uninstall fmod ex. hope having both installed isn’t causing problem.

here’s all the info i could get from the ‘needs to close’ dialog:

AppName: fmod_designer.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: fmod_designer.exe
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000f02d0

Thanks for the info. I’ve reproduced the crash and we’ll try to put a fix in for our next release. Having FMOD Designer and FMOD Ex Programmer’s API installed at the same time will not cause any problems.

Cheers,
