FMOD looks like it might do what I want but I thought I’d ask you chaps and chapettes just to confirm my……hopes. What I want to do is essentially load two MODs, play one and then programmatically morph to the other one. I won’t get into the rules I’ll use for morphing but essentially it will involve pitch changes, instrument/wav changes and timing changes (not tempo) but timing of the play of a sound within the MOD (beat position). Can I dynamically update all this, in real time with FMOD? I guess the question really is can I dynamically update the in memory data structure for the currently playing MOD?

DirectMusic offers quite a lot of stuff for complex crossfading etc. if you are willing to take the time to learn it. It can work side-by-side with FMOD : just enforce the use of FSOUND_OUTPUT_DSOUND, get the (IDirectSound *) using FSOUND_GetOutputHandle() and pass that to DirectMusic for usage.
