The documentation says that the default speaker mode for FMOD_SOFTWARE for Xbox 360 is 5.1. All of our wavebanks are forced to play through software since all audio on Xbox 360 is done in software. However, the proper location of sound sources seems to be inconsistent during game play and I am wondering what we are doing incorrectly. Do we need to be setting the speaker mode?

We also encounter sounds coming from the wrong speakers when outputting audio to stereo. Again, we are not specifying the speaker mode at all because the documentation says that default is 5.1 for software and to let the user set the speaker output on the console settings, so in the case of stereo we are relying on FMOD to downmix from 5.1 to stereo. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

no you dont need to set speaker mode. FMOD defaults to 5.1 on 360.
If you have 3d positioning issues, either your 3d input is wrong (ie listener has unit length, perpendicular vectors?), or maybe 3d pan level is set towards being 2d, or a few other settings like that.

Downmixing is not controlled by fmod at all. It is the xbox 360 dashboard and operating system that does that stuff, so it is unlikely to be playing stuff out of incorrect l/r speakers, it must be wrong originally in 5.1. You’ll have to set up some more specific tests.
