I notice when watching the rainbox six vegas gameplay videos (on desktop stereo speakers) that the 3D sound fx sound "wider" than my stereo setup. I don’t mean stereo width in the sense of mono/stereo ratio of the material but the sound has this illusion of coming from a place the speaker isn’t..it sounds like its coming from a foot away from where the speaker really is.
Is this regular hrtf filtering or could this be something like dolby virtual speaker? Any sort of technique like this in fmod?

From what I can tell, Dolby Virtual Speaker is just a marketing name for a particular HRTF algorithm developed by Dolby Labs. It sounds like the video probably had a Pro Logic II encoded soundtrack in order to be able to do this, but this is just supposition.
I don’t think FMod has a built-in HRTF algorithm (correct me if I’m wrong here). It instead relies on installed hardware to perform this task.
