Is there anyway to add an Event to a ChannelGroup via the Designer API? Does doing such a thing go against the data driven methodology of Designer? The reason I ask is because I am using a mixed approach for the sounds in my game. Speech and music are coming straight from .OGGs while sound effects coordinated with animations are coming from the FMOD Event System. Furthermore, all non-animation related sound effects are coming from OGGs. Thus, I want to group the Event effects and the non-Event effects in one ChannelGroup. Is this possible?

This is basically what categories are for. You can apply an effect to a category by calling EventCategory::getChannelGroup and ChannelGroup::addDSP.

Actually there is also Event::getChannelGroup so you could theoretically call yourgroup->addGroup(eventchannelgrou) to do what you say but that could cause problems with the eventsystem getting out of sync to what it thinks it should be, but mainly it incurs more cpu time due to extra connects and disconnects that are already done with the category.
