I am trying to write a game/demo and synchronizing music with visual effects on the screen. The sound track I am playing is a mod file (protracker/fasttracker modules), and the problem I am having deals with
seeking the song to a particlar position.
First of all I would like to know if this is possible? The only thing I have found in the fmod documenation which come close to what I need is the FSOUND_Stream_SetTime function, but this is a stream function, and I am using a mod file, and I don’t think fmod can play mod files through FSOUND_Stream_Play, or that FSOUND_Stream_SetTime can be called with a FMUSIC_MODULE pointer.
Anyhow, the reason I need be able to seek the postion of a song is because I don’t want to have to play through the entire demo just to test something with the look of the effect and the music at the end of the demo. It’s very frustrating to go through four minutes of demo to check if a particular visual effect works well with the music by having to sit around waiting for the track to hit 4 minutes and 29.8 seconds.
I am sure other people that are using fmod for demos or games have run into the same problem. What is the best way to handle this?
Also, I’d like to ask what is a good relatively inexpensive tool for examining the waveform, with close to precise timings, of mod/mp3 files (emphasis on mod files)? I think I’d be much more productive if I could get a close to accurate (perhaps to the tenth of a second) look at the times I should drop visual effects into my demo based on action in the music I am playing.
I hope you all undertsand what I am asking about. I’d really like to get on with working other stuff like artwork/models :p
Thanks in advance,
