Hi!

I’ve got a number of questions about the new output modes in the development branch:

1.) How do I determine whether or not OpenAL output is supported on the audio hardware. Is there a particular combination of FMOD_CAPS I should be looking for?

2.) What happens if I select the OpenAL output mode and Dolby Prologic speaker configuration? Does everything still work as expected? Are there any caveats or weirdnesses with this combination?

3.) Will OpenAL ever get selected if I do OUTPUTTYPE_AUTODETECT?

4.) Is OUTPUTTYPE_WASAPI selected by default if I use OUTPUTTYPE_AUTODETECT on a Vista machine?

Thank you!

FMOD_CAPS_HARDWARE means it is supported properly, FMOD_CAPS_HARDWARE_EMULATED means you are falling back to software and might as well use dsound output.

If OpenAL isnt even installed, an error will be returned on init, and probably getcaps.

This is no different to Dsound or any other output mode. The ‘prologic’ speakermode simply changes the panning calculations in fmod’s internal code.
In fact because that is software only, its likely that you wont get any effect if you decide to use FMOD_HARDWARE.

3.) Will OpenAL ever get selected if I do OUTPUTTYPE_AUTODETECT?

Nope. We don’t encourage this output mode, it is less featured than just using FMOD_SOFTWARE for everything, though we have ported some of the stuff across.

4.) Is OUTPUTTYPE_WASAPI selected by default if I use OUTPUTTYPE_AUTODETECT on a Vista machine?

Yes, it already says this right next to FMOD_OUTPUTTYPE_WASAPI entry.
