I would like access to a parameter (angle) in the fmod event system that represents the current angle to the sound source from the listener. It would function similar to the (distance) parameter which is the distance to the sound source from the listener. 0 degrees should be the normal facing forward from the listener, and it would be expected that the parameter is set to loop.

As an example, you could use this parameter to drive effects changes based on angle; for instance a chorus mix or eq cut when something is playing from behind you.

As a possible follow up would be a second parameter for the angle of the sound source’s normal to the listener.

thanks

This would be easy for a coder to add, and saves having to do the maths for every event.

Add a user param in designer, like ‘angle’, code looks for param, if found then it calculates the angle, and sets the param(s).

We use this functionality for a lot of things with fmod, and it works really great.

Am I mistaken, or are these angles already known in the fmod 3d mixer as the basis of setting a pan position and volume?

I’d just like access to these values in the event system.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion, that sounds like a useful feature. We will make a decision on this and get back to you soon.

Hi, I have just added this feature. From revision.txt:

[code:2frqm4el]
+ Added a "(heading)" parameter; any parameter with the name "(heading)" is
automatically updated with the angle to the event about the listener’s up
vector (-180 to 180 degrees).
[/code:2frqm4el]

I decided to call it "(heading)" because that seemed more descriptive than "(angle)".

This feature will be in the next released version.

Thanks,
Ben

Superb, that sounds great Ben!

I’m looking forward (at 0°) to it.

thanks!

Hi, Yes I do understand how such a parameter may be useful.

I first wanted to ask if there were other such parameters computed by default by Fmod’s events system, when I realized that this could be found by right-clic menu in the parameters bar in the designer.
Is that right ? (In this case, I only find 3D distance parameter)
If it is wrong, maybe a list of these parameters should be useful.

Thanks.

Ah yes, that menu should include all automatic parameters – I need to add the heading parameter to it.
At the moment, distance and heading are the only two automatic parameters.
