Hi, I’ve been reading up on audio libraries and FMOD seems one of the best. However, before I dive in I’d like to know if FMOD can do the things I require. I hit a stumbling block with SDL_Mixer is the reason I ask.

My app is an ambient sound mixer, where the user will be able to play up to five ambient sound tracks and mix volume, select new tracks, adjust effects such as reverb, pitch all on the fly. I suppose what I’m looking for is a way to mix multiple streaming files, and to be able to adjust their attributes in real time.

If anyone with FMOD experience can let me know if this is possible, I’d be grateful. Thanks, Daniel

Hey, Daniel –

I don’t see any reason why FMOD wouldn’t allow you to do what you ask. You didn’t specify platform or anything, but if you’re working on PC, you can easily do multiple streams (or even interleaved multi-channel streams) to mix a variety of different ambiences and apply realtime pitch, volume and DSP effects.

Thanks for the quick reply! And for telling me just what I wanted to hear :-) I was hoping to keep this app cross-platform, using C++ with Qt. Will I have problems or incompatibilities there?

No everything is cross platform. Just make sure you use FMOD_SOFTWARE with your createSound calls.
