We are experiencing some issues with one of our guys systems using FMOD and a game engine.

The issue he is seeing is some lag when a sound is first played, potentially 2-3 secs for a 40k .wav file, if that, but after first play, it seems fine.

His system is XP64 and he has a SB Live! card. I’m suspecting more of his problem is the sound card and its drivers, but he doesn’t seem to have issues with just some of the FMOD examples (that he can see anyways). He does have issues with "Pure" OpenAL and ogg streaming, but not with oneshot sounds.

We previously weren’t preloading anything into memory, but after doing that, hes still seeing the delay before the sound is played initially, despite having pre-created the sound with FMOD, so all that has to be done is play it.

Any suggestions

Not sure what we changed, but seemed to got it resolved. It was either a combination of ignoretags or lowmem or just handling flags better..

We’re having the same problem now on our PC title. (BigWorld engine)

sounds a bit like something that would happen if you used FMOD_OPENONLY on stream, but that would be all I can think of.

Otherwise i’ll need instructions on how to repro it. 2-3 seconds isnt even the size of a mix buffer so there’s nothing in fmod that could cause that delay.
If you’re using the event system, maybe the sound is still being loaded from disk before it plays.
