Hi,

Looking through the FMOD documentation I did not find an answer to this question. What is the difference between Categories and Groups in the FMOD Designer API?

I know that, according to the documentation, Even Groups can be used to load only those specific sounds from the sound bank. They’re used for loading purposes. However, I’m not sure about Event Categories.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

As far as I can tell, FMOD uses categories for creating channel group structure in its DSP tree. Basically, it replicates category hierarchy with channel groups. Try to experiment with categories and use net listener tool to view what’s the effect.
Unfortunately, designer v.11.06 doesn’t have DSPNET flag on, so you should use event player for that. Not sure about fresh build, though. :-)

I tend to think of categories as a bus, any events on them are pooled (even across projects), so you can control them from in-program/game as one, with volume/pitch/mute/pause setting etc.

Yeah, agreed w/ a1psx. Categories are for mixing, Groups are for data management.
