I’m having a very difficult time managing my templates and was hoping someone could help me out.
I have a collection of templates that is being used by a large number of FDPs. Recently, I’ve needed to update some of those templates, so I opened a representative FDP, edited the template, saved the project, and then opened another project expecting to see the updated changes for each template so that I could apply them.
I’ve not found that. It appears that each usage of the template is saved only in the FDP itself, so even though I update a template, I now have to update it again in every single other project. I’m fairly certain this is not how it’s supposed to be.
So I searched my disk to make sure there weren’t duplicate FDTs littering the disk. Again, I was wrong, and found close to 150 of them. So I checked my Preferences in Designer, set a new template in a neutral location, and then deleted all other FDTs. I again tried to update a template and see if the changed templates would load with their updates in other project files. Again, it’s not working. If I change a template in one project file, the template doesn’t load its updates in another project file.
How on earth am I supposed to fix this? This setup is pretty much ruining the point of templates, so I’m really hoping there’s some way I can just nuke the whole thing and start fresh, so long as it works.
Any help would be very appreciated.
I have now deleted all templates from all FDPs, removed all references, and then created new ones. Templates still are not accepting updates when changes are made to an external instance.
Edit: I’ve found that as long as I don’t save a project after it first populates itself with available templates, the templates in that project still accept updates from external instances. If I save the project, the templates no longer accept updates. Is this a bug or a design flaw? Or maybe I’m just not doing this right?
