Hi there,

I’m having an issue with silent .wav files. We are introducing a pause in a music segment script that plays a silent .wav file. When playing back the silent .wav file in FMod, the duration of silence is not consistent with the actual length of the silent file. It plays for about half the time.

Furthermore, if I bank up the silent wav file into a mp3 encoded fsb file, I get an FMOD_ERR_INVALID_FORMAT error. I realize that I could just handle the silence programmatically but this is an easy way to introduce a pause in between music segments for the time being. Is it intended not to handle silent files gracefully?

Thanks,
D’ar

Are you working with the Interactive Music System?

I’m using an interactive music system that I’ve written on top of FMod. The current interactive music system didn’t meet our requirements.

Either way, shouldn’t silence just be able to be played back normally?

Silence has nothing to do with the duration of a sound. If you load and play a wav that is silent it will play for exactly the same time as if it had audio in it. You have given us next to no information about the problem – are you using low level API calls in FMOD to play these sounds? How are you ‘introducing’ the sound?

I’m using two subsound sentence that stitches music chunks together. I’m playing one subsound while the other one updates, like your real-time stitching example. When I play a bunch of music chunks in sequence and it encounters a silent wav file, it doesn’t play for the same length of silence that the wav file indicates.
