Hi everybody !

I know ! This question comes over and over again, but I’m sick of searching without results :x. Can’t anybody give me a straight link to download a dll or whatever file that I can just load into my application ? All I want is being able to read AAC files !! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thx a lot !

hi guys,
first, you have a great forum here!
helped me alot in the past.

i am looking for an aac-plugin, so i’d like to know if someone already wrote one.
i would try making one if there’s none so far, but right now and in the near future i won’t have enough time, therefore it’s going to take a while until i can start working on that.

btw., is there maybe a general fmod ex plugin site or something similar?
i googled but either i had the wrong magic words or there isn’t such a thing …

sincerely,
julian

Hi guys,

Just to make sure, are you aware of this:

and the fees

These has been slowing down me a bit more that the technical challenge of making the plugin…

Hi,

AAC files aren’t supported by FMOD

Yes I know. But isn’t there a plugin or something that can be used to read AAC files ? Can’t you load an extra-codec ? And if yes, where can I get this codec / plugin ?

IANAL, but I think the relevant license is the general AAC decoder license not the MPEG2 AAC license which it has largely superseded. The license for an AAC decoder is 0.48$US/unit for "consumer PC software" or 0.98$US/per unit for up to 500K units of "other than PC software" plus a one-time $1000 or $15000 fee.

Maybe you can leverage QuickTime’s AAC decoder if you are on PC or Mac. QuickTime would seem to qualify as "PC enabling software" and would be already licensed as such.

I dont know if anyone has made one, it is very easy to do, but we can’t release it, because libFAAD2 is GPL

True AAC decoding is provided by Mac operating system (and possibly by quicktime for windows), so that could be a way to do it. Anyone can download Quicktime for free, but providing your own distributions can be more difficult.

It also seems that the FAAC is GPL or LGPL. Under the LPGL license (as far as I know) you can link to the code in that library without requiring to release your source code. (ie: Proprietary code can link to LGPL code).

I haven’t looked at the license exactly, and I’m no lawyer, but it could be worth exploring…..

Ah okay. So there really is no way to read AAC files with FMOD. But if making a codec / plugin is really so easy, how can I do one myself ?

You search and see if you can find a general AAC library, then you look in the FMOD examples how to make a FMOD input plugin.

Yes ! That’s exactly what I have been searching for : a general AAC library. But I can’t find a straigt link that either gives me one, or gives me the instructions to make one ! After that, I have read the examples for making a plugin into FMOD and that’s not going to be a problem. The library is the problem.

You aren’t very good at searching then… ๐Ÿ˜€ I spent one minutes and come up with this:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/melo/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/faac/
