I have noticed the
FMOD_RESULT SoundGroup::setMuteFadeSpeed(float speed);

Is this the only way I can fade in FMOD?

I read something about having to manually tick up and down the sound volume in an old post, is that still true?

Yes you can easily implement fading by increasing/decreasing the volume per frame.
