The following is an audio waveform of a sound source moving away from the listener at a fairly constant rate. Notice the multiple abrupt dropoffs in volume as the object gets further and further away, rather than a smooth decline in amplitude. It is very noticeable when listening to the actual audio.

Is there a commonly known cause / fix for something like this? Thanks in advance.

[Edit: Vista32, SP2, SoundMAX Integrated audio — but this same behavior happens on all configurations I’ve tried.]
