I’m lowering the sample rate on a few of my audio files to reduce memory usage.

As far as I understand, one has two choices:

  • Optimise Sample rate = NO
  • Optimise Sample rate = YES.

NO: there is no sample rate optimisation option on sounds in a wavebank.

YES: the sample rate optimisation value set in the sound bank is relative to whatever Fmod internally determines.

Is there a manual mode? ie: can I set dialogue to be sampled at 22kHz and sfx at 32kHz?

Is there a way to detemine whatever rate Fmod has chosen?

Is there a way to see an "encoded file size" column in the wave bank view, as well as the "File Size" column we currently have which shows the source file size.

I can export my files again at various sample rates, but I figure this should be a part of the sound bank compiling process.

Hi Matt,

Yes, in the wave banks tab right click on the wavform and select the menu item "Adjust sample rate optimisation". When you hit play the first time, it will find the optimised sample rate and display it above the slider.

You can set the rates individually or multiselect and choose what percentage of the optimised rate you want to set them to. I’m not sure if manually setting the sample rate is desirable in most cases for two reasons:
1. The optimised rate is estimated as the lowest rate not causing audible changes to the sound. Obviously this rate will vary according to the content so specifying the rate across all sounds will cause varying levels of fidelity instead of affecting the sound quality of all files in a similar way.
2. There is good chance that some files will end up with a higher sampling rate than they require.

On the other hand, I can see how it might be nice to set a fixed minimum rate to consistantly preserve a certain level of high frequency content or noise when reducing the optimised rate.

Not at the moment but that sounds like a good idea. That information would only be available after the bank is built though.

Cheers,
Gino

I have a laptop which I dual-boot vista/ubuntu, and I dont like using Audacity with Ubuntu. I find Ubuntu generally doesnt work very well with my sound card granted its not a great sound card either and Audacity is a bit slo. I havent had the sample rate problem, though.
