Hi guys,

I’ve got a bunch of memory sounds, music loops, that I want to transition between and layer. Some are really percussive so timing of the startup is critical.

I’m noticing it can take a noticeable amount of time to start a sound, between calling playSound (started paused, setting channel parameters, etc., then unpausing) and actually hearing the sound… making our layered loops sound like a trainwreck.

I’m using xma on 360 here but I imagine this is common to any platform. I can’t imagine the delay is caused by the time it takes to decode the start of the sound (i.e. would PCM be faster to startup?)

What is this latency caused by, and how can we eliminate it?

The fmod mixing latency on 360 is about 5ms. This sort of latency is not noticable. What sort of latency are you talking about?

We can’t comment on this because it sounds like you’ve got some configuration setting wrong. Try the playsound example it doesnt have any latency when you play a sound. Is this the same for you?

We will need more detail,example code and figures I think to work out what is going on here.
