A heads up to everyone if you have problems with templates (specifically projects referencing templates that don’t exist anymore) you can get crashes building with Fmod Designer. Good news there’s a fix coming.
Massive props to all the gang at Fmod who helped track it down and keep me working – fantastic support!!
And a hint to all fellow users to check the Message Log window – especially when opening a project – for any strange messages. (If I did this I could have seen it coming, or at least had a better idea of where to start looking for cause of problem).

To rule out if it’s my system or my technique, I reverted to Designer version 4.23.05 (the last version that we shipped a game with) and it turns out that the problem isn’t happening in that version. So it would appear that the problem is linked to an update within Designer. I then created a new project and a new template file within 4.28.04 and still no luck getting my templates to save (the project saves that it’s using the template, but the contents of the template do not). Hopefully one of the Firelight guys sees this post. If not, I’ll email them.
Just to update anyone else that might be having this problem. The templates not saving issue has been confirmed to be a bug in the recent versions of Designer and I’m told that it will be fixed in the next release. So, if you need to save some templates, you’ll probably need to use an older version of Designer.
Thanks, Matt. I’m also having some template woes with 4.28.00.
I can’t seem to save new templates all of sudden. Perhaps this problem is related to the crash you’re seeing?
– I create an event.
– Turn it into a template and it shows up in my template list (with my previously created templates).
– I then save and close down my project.
– When I re-open the project, my recently added template is gone.
Sorry if it’s just me forgetting to do something.
- that the path for the template file is correct (I use a relative path "template.fdt" which works for me); and
- that the template file is writeable (not locked by perforce, etc)
Some time ago I had some problems early on where it was trying to save to a template file that didn’t exist, or was a temporary location and was being erased on me.
