Wondering about this: maybe when you’re using EAX, samples are directly loaded into RAM and played back by the EMU10k1 or any other processor that is capable to work with EAX. Those processors usually modify the samples using lowpass and interpolation filters and usually they have privileged digital paths for output. This means that every sound played uses a channel of the audio card (on SbLive! cards there are 32 3d Channels and 64 2d Channels). Without EAX, sounds are mixed in software and are played using just one wave path. Also mixers are different with different filters and so on…

However I think it works in this manner, but I don’t really know how FMOD uses EAX internally.
