Hello all,

I’m new here and to FMOD (and VST), so please be gentle 😀

I have taken FMOD as the engine for a personal project of mine and have a couple of questions regarding the VST side of the API.

I have figured out how to load VST plugins, link them etc (actually, the examples showed me pretty much everything). What I’m missing is how to actually play a note through a plugin.

I am using the Synth1 (synthesizer) plugin. When I load the plugin via other hosts, they usually give siome sort of keyboard interface allowing me to play a key, taking the settings of the synthesizer and passing it to the sound card (so you can actually hear something). How can I achieve the same effect with FMOD? I’m not asking how to implement a keyboard interface, I just want to know how to tell the plugin to play a note via the sound card.

Using FMOD I have loaded the plugin and had it print all (255…!) of its parameters to the console. I then pain-stakingly went through each one and fiddled with the parameter values to see if it was one of those, but none of those worked.

A function I’m missing? A call-back function perhaps? I don’t know.

If anyone has the answer or can point me in the right research direction I’d be very greatful.

Thanks,

The only programmatic interface with VSTs in FMOD is via the parameters, your other option is to display the VSTs GUI via DSP::showConfigDialog and control it that way.

Sorry to interject, but quick question about this topic. It sounds like you want to load a VSTi with FMOD, as opposed to a VST effect (i.e. echo, etc.). It’s my understanding that FMOD really only supports VST effects. Am I mistaken?

That is correct, we only really support VSTs as effects, not instruments as their is no way to feed MIDI control data into the VSTi from FMOD.
