Aside from 3d positioning, dopper effect, and other nifty effects, how advanced is hardware 3d sound positioning? I have been looking into a lot of the technical lititure about aspects of human spatial sound perception, and have learned about HRTF for positioning, fourier, crosstalk, etc.. is this all stuff that modern sound cards are doing, or is it much simpler Left/Right and Forward/Back panning?

I am wondering cause i am already doing the latter in my project, and wanna know how much better it will sound using FMOD api to make use of my soundcards surround sound capabilites. just a curiousity…
