There are a lot of factors causing the problem some of us are suffering, but many people have recently reported that the following has solved their VIA chipset + SB Live! hanging problems:
VIA SouthBridge 82C686B Bug
A German hardware site discovered a glitch bug in the 686B Southbridge of its popular KT133A chipset for AMD CPUs. Large DMA data transfers between hard drives on separate IDE channels caused data corruption. The presence of a Sound Blaster Live! worsens the problem. VIA has confirmed the problem and will issue a BIOS patch soon. Meanwhile, there is a patch available at http://www.viahardware.com/download/viatweak.shtm. Alternatively, you can use these BIOS settings that have been reported to work:
PCI Delay Transaction: 0 or off
PCI Master Read Caching: 0 or off
PCI Latency: any value from 0 to 32
NOTE: these latest BIOS settings doesn’t appear on your BIOS menu unless you install the latest beta update from http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kt7/downloads/BIOS/kt7ztb01.zip
In any case, if you’re experiencing problems, check http://www.viahardware.com in order to seek for info.
PLEASE NOTE: I know you’re not stupid, but if you flash the BIOS and don’t know much about configuring it, REMEMBER TO WRITE DOWN YOUR ACTUAL CONFIG !!! And of course, don’t blame if it makes your computer explode or sth like that 😛
