Hello,

I use the fmod sound system in my freeware project. I don´t get any money for this project. Now I read that I must have a license for the mp3 codec for example to play mp3. On the website http://www.mp3licensing.com/ I can´t find license information about freeware projects. Now the question: Can I use the mp3 codec for free without any license in my freeware project or must I pay anything to use this? Can I find a confirmation somewhere on the website http://www.mp3licensing.com/ or something else so that I really know that what I do is correct?

There was a discussion about this earlier this year or late last year. For freeware projects you do not need a licence. For projects where you licence FMOD, the MP3 playback licence is included in the FMOD licence. I believe that’s how it works.

Hi,

and what about the thomson license in freeware projects? Must I pay for this or not? Can I find a confirmation on the site http://www.mp3licensing.com?

If you can, consider using Ogg Vorbis in stead of mp3. It’s 100% license and patent free, and it’s better than mp3 both quality and size-wise. http://www.vorbis.com =)

Do you mean here the thomson license or the fmod license? Where can I find a confirmation on the website http://www.mp3licensing.com or an other correct confirmation?

Both. FMOD is free for freeware. MP3 is free for freeware.
