I want to implement a machine gun sound. The sound should loop very quickly while the machine gun is firing, and when it stops, there needs to be a few seconds of trailer.

I’ve tried to mush something together with 2 sounds (one looping, one not), and then transitioning between the two by stopping the looping sound, and playing the trailer. It sucks for various reasons.

Because of the limited looping 3D hardware sound buffer support I’m wondering what the easiest way of doing this is. Whatever the solution, I’d like the use 3D sound hardware if possible.

I very much want to use hardware 3D sounds. I’d like to benefit from eax reverb in the end, and I believe for cards that can do 3D hardware sounds, things will sound better.

Am I missunderstanding the benefits of 3D hardware sounds?

Anyhow, if someone else would like to comment on their thoughts on the easiest way to implement a looping sound with trailer (such a machine gun firing, and then stopping to fire), using 3D hardware… please let know.
