I’m a little confused about the compression formats and how FMOD uses them. (And what exactly happens if I create a sound with FMOD_SOFTWARE flag.) Especially, the documentation says that “FMOD does not support native software mixing of XMA”; does this mean that the whole XMA is first decompressed into memory before any mixing is done?

What would be the most powerful compressed format to use with FMOD? Let’s say I have to use FMOD_SOFTWARE (or FMOD_CREATESTREAM) when creating sound from .XMA file to get some DSP effects, for instance. In that case, are there any benefits at all to use XMA compression if FMOD decompresses the file to PCM at load time anyway, therefore using more memory?
