I’ve inherited some code that calls FMOD::Sound::getOpenState(..) on a sound and if that returns anything other than FMOD_OPENSTATE_CONNECTING, it calls FMOD::Sound::Release on the sound which then freezes.

Is this the correct heuristic of when to call ‘release’ or is it likely something else is broken?

probably need more information than this, are you talking about a netstream or a normal disk based file?
