Hi! I’m considering usign FMOD for my program. I’ve been programming visual basic for 4 years, and FMOD looks very complicated to me. I also notice a lot of people have problems using it. Do you really think its worth it to use FMOD? Does anyone know some tutorals for me to get started?

Whether or not FMOD is “worth it” or not depends on your requirements. If all you want to do is “play a sound” then maybe you should just use the Windows API – FMOD has a lot of functions because it has a lot of functionality (a lot more than the Windows API). It’s up to you to look at your requirements and then decide whether FMOD is the right tool for the job – no-one else can do it for you.
btw, I recommend FMOD 😀
Yeah, you are right, the VB examples arent very well coded. But, FMOD is the best audio library that I have found. If all you need to do is play a sound than you dont even have to worry about most of the API calls. The VB module has “hundreds” of API calls because it was written to make the most out of FMOD, but you can scale it down and only keep the API calls that you need. Thus eliminating the confusion. About the help file, its not to hard to understand it, there are tutorials that should explain everything for you.
Here, check this out:
I never said FMOD was hard. I just said it looked complicated. I haven’t had enough experience with FMOD to say if it is hard or easy because I haven’t had time yet to sit down with it an play with it. I also didn’t find any VB tutorials in the CHM file either. I just saw the sample, without Option Explicit, and immediately thought “badly coded!” and that was pretty much it.
I also never said I programmed in VB 4. I’ve been programming in VB 6.0 for 4 years. I’ve also been using the Windows API for about three years, and can do just about anything I need for a specific task with only a few calls. All I want with FMOD is sound, and there are hundreds of calls here. That sounds like an awful lot of stuff when all I want to do is play sound, especially when I can do it through the Windows API with one or two calls. (albeit severely limited compared to what FMOD is supposed to offer).
I’m not looking to start a debate; I just want to know if FMOD is worth it. Apparently there are a few people here who are eager to defend it. I’m just looking for something to help me get started, since I could not find any samples (apart from the horrendous code in the download, and nothing at all in the CHM file), and would like a tutorial to get me started. That’s all I want.
Fmod is a sound system API, it doesn’t depend on a particular language so the think you called “VB documentation” are not the documentation but only 2 simple sample to show how to use FMOD. The documentation is the .Chm file.
You found hundreds of calls of enumerations ? Do you relly programm in VB ? You can’t use a DLL without declaring them …
Lot of posts doesn’t mean FMOD is hard to use, almost all pb can be resolved bu just looking to the documentation but there can be real pb.
FMOD can play a song with 5 lines of code, is it too hard for you ?
Well, I looked at the module, and there were hundreds of calls and enumerations. Not only that, but the only VB documentation I found were some dubiously coded samples (No Option Explicit? What the?). Not to mention, all the posts in this forum about the problems people are having… it just seems like more hassle than it’s worth, although someone recommended I use FMOD for my app.
