Mixing Groups not working

Hey everyone,

I’m sure this is an easy fix and I’m just missing something in the signal path, but I have assigned multiple events to a few Sub Groups ( Music, AMBI, Vocals)

I then load up the game and put it in Live Edit Mode and move the slider of the Sub Group and I don’t hear a volume change.

Is there a step I’m missing to creating Sub Groups for changing the volume of many events at once before they hit the Master ?

Thanks,
Kristi

Does your project feature a ‘Reverb’ return bus, any other return buses, or any transceiver effects? If so, the duplicate signals sent to these may be using signal paths other than your group bus, and may therefore not be affected by changes to that bus’ volume.

Does your project make use of the Google VR plugin, or a similar spatialization/3D plugin? By design, the google VR plugin bypasses much of the mixer and so does not work in conjunction with group bus-based project mixing; If you want to make use of mixer-based routing in your project, you will have to stop using this plugin.

Did you rebuild your project after making changes to the routing and before starting Live Update? Changes to routing do not propagate to the project during live update at this time, so if you want to change which bus an event or bus routes into you will have to rebuild your banks and start a new live update session.

If none of the above comments help, we may need more information about your project to understand what’s happening here. Are you able to send a copy of your project to support@fmod.com?

My project does have a “Reverb” return bus. If I remove the reverb is it safe to assume the Groups would work?

It does not make use of the Google VR plugin or similiar spatialization plugins.

I did rebuild my project after making changes to the routing and before starting Live Update.

Kristi

Deleting the ‘reverb’ return bus may or may not solve your problem. Sends to returns create a duplicate signal; If these sends are located ‘upstream’ of your group bus’ volume fader, changes to that fader will not affect the signal sent from those sends. (If this is the cause of your issue, the volume changes you’re applying to your group buses are working, but the output of your return bus, which duplicates that of other events in your project, is downing out the change.)

Incidentally, group buses do not actually alter the volumes of the events and other buses that route into them. Rather, each group bus creates a submix of everything routed into it; The fader of a group bus affects the volume of that submix.

Removing the Reverb did fix this issue. THANK YOU!!

Hi Joseph,
If my project uses the resonance audio plugin, does that mean I can no longer do any mixing using groups and subgroups in the mixer?

Yes and no. The Resonance Audio plugin effects prevent group-based mixing only of the events using those effects, not the entire project.

Each Resonance Audio Soundfield or Resonance Audio Source effect routes a signal from its location to the Resonance Audio Listener effect located elsewhere in your project, and the Resonance Audio Listener effect replaces the signal of the bus on which it is located with the mixed signal it receives from those Resonance Audio Soundfield and Source effects. This means that any signal from upstream of a Resonance Audio Source or Soundfield effect will bypass buses located downstream of that effect, and that that nothing upstream of a Resonance Audio Listener effect will produce audible output through the Listener effect’s bus. Events that do not contain Resonance Audio Soundfield or Resonance Audio Source effects, on the other hand, route their outputs into group buses normally, and so can benefit from bus-based mixing as long as your project’s Resonance Audio Listener effect is not in their routing path.
